The Pilgrim's Journey

From the City of Destruction to the Celestial City — A Study Guide & Worksheet

Based on John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (1678) | For personal study, small groups, and discipleship

📋 Study Guide Overview

Source: John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (1678)
Theme: The Christian life as an epic journey
Audience: Men's groups, discipleship, personal study
Sessions: 30 stages across 3 acts (multi-week)
The Pilgrim's Progress is the second most-read book in Christian history after the Bible. Written by John Bunyan while imprisoned for preaching the gospel, it maps the Christian life as a journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Every location is a spiritual reality you'll face. Every character is someone you'll meet — or become. Every trial is a test of whether your faith is real or performative. This study guide walks through all 30 stages with scripture, reflection prompts, and action steps designed to move you from passive reading to radical obedience.
"What shall I do to be saved?"
— Christian's first cry, echoing Acts 16:30
1

City of Destruction

Christian lives in a city that is under judgment — but nobody else seems to care. His neighbors laugh at him. His family thinks he's lost his mind. He carries a burden on his back that he cannot remove, and he knows that if he stays, he'll be destroyed with everyone else. This is the starting point for every believer: the moment you realize something is terribly wrong with the life you've been living.
Romans 6:23"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Ezekiel 33:11"As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess that I lived in the City of Destruction and didn't even know it. I renounce the lie that says my old life was fine. Open my eyes to see what I was saved from — and never let me forget it."

🪞 Reflect

"What 'City of Destruction' were you living in before you woke up? What burden finally got heavy enough to make you move? Are there people still in that city who need you to go back and warn them?"

⚡ Act

"Write down one area of your life where you're still living in the city — a habit, a relationship, a mindset. Name it. Then take one concrete step out this week (2 Corinthians 6:17)."

2

Evangelist Points the Way

Christian is desperate but has no idea where to go. Then Evangelist appears with a single instruction: "Do you see yonder shining light? Keep your eye on it and go directly to the Wicket Gate." Evangelist doesn't carry the burden for Christian. He doesn't walk the road for him. He simply points to the narrow gate and says, "Go." Every believer needs an Evangelist — and every believer needs to become one.
Matthew 7:13-14"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it."
Romans 10:14"How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?"
🙏 Pray

"Lord, thank You for the Evangelist who pointed me to the Gate. I confess I haven't been that person for others. Make me an Evangelist — give me eyes to see who's desperate and a voice to point them to Jesus."

🪞 Reflect

"Who was your Evangelist — the person who first pointed you toward Christ? Have you ever thanked them? And who are you pointing toward the Gate right now? If no one, why not?"

⚡ Act

"This week, point someone toward the light. It doesn't have to be a sermon — it can be a text, a conversation, or simply saying, 'Have you ever considered what Jesus said about that?' (Romans 10:14)."

3

The Slough of Despond

Almost immediately after starting the journey, Christian falls into a swamp — the Slough of Despond. It's made of guilt, shame, fear, and all the discouragement that comes when someone tries to follow God. His companion Pliable quits immediately and goes home. But Help arrives and pulls Christian out, showing him the stepping stones (God's promises) that were there all along. The Slough is the enemy's first trap: make you feel like the journey isn't worth it before you've barely begun.
Psalm 40:2"He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps sure."
Psalm 34:18"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."
Romans 8:1"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
🙏 Pray

"Father, I confess I have let shame and guilt pull me under. I renounce the lie that I'm too dirty, too broken, or too far gone. You pulled me out of the miry bog — I refuse to crawl back in (Romans 8:1)."

🪞 Reflect

"What is your Slough? What guilt, shame, or past failure keeps dragging you under? Are you still sinking, or has someone pulled you out? Who is your 'Help' — and are you being Help for someone else?"

⚡ Act

"Confess one thing to a trusted brother that you've been carrying alone. Break the power of shame in the light. 'Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed' (James 5:16)."

4

Mr. Worldly Wiseman

Just when Christian is on the right path, he meets Mr. Worldly Wiseman — a smooth-talking neighbor who offers "practical advice." Instead of the narrow gate, he suggests Christian visit the village of Morality and find a man named Legality to remove his burden. It sounds reasonable. It sounds wise. But it's a detour away from the Cross. Worldly wisdom always offers a comfortable alternative to genuine repentance. It says: "You don't need the Cross — you just need to be a better person."
Colossians 2:8"See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ."
1 Corinthians 1:18"For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."
🙏 Pray

"Father, give me discernment to reject worldly wisdom dressed as common sense. I confess I've listened to voices that pull me away from the Cross. I renounce the lie that self-improvement can replace salvation."

🪞 Reflect

"Who is your Mr. Worldly Wiseman? What 'reasonable' voice is offering you an alternative to genuine obedience? Is it a podcast, a philosophy, a friend who says 'take it easy' when God says 'go deeper'?"

⚡ Act

"Identify one piece of 'worldly wisdom' you've adopted that contradicts Scripture. Replace it with the truth this week. Write both down — the lie and the verse that refutes it (2 Corinthians 10:5)."

5

The Wicket Gate

Christian finally reaches the narrow gate — the Wicket Gate. He knocks, and Good-will opens it. But as he enters, arrows fly from Beelzebub's castle nearby. The enemy doesn't want anyone through that gate. Entry into God's kingdom is never unopposed. The gate is narrow but it is open. And the one who opens it pulls you through — even under fire.
John 10:9"I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture."
Matthew 7:14"For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few."
🙏 Pray

"Jesus, You are the Gate. I entered through You, and I will not turn back. I confess the times I've doubted my salvation. I stand firm: I knocked, and You opened (Revelation 3:20)."

🪞 Reflect

"When did you 'knock on the gate'? Was your decision to follow Christ deliberate or gradual? And are you now helping others find the gate — or have you forgotten where it is?"

⚡ Act

"Write your testimony in 3 sentences: who you were, what happened, and who you are now. Share it with one person this week. 'Always be prepared to give an answer' (1 Peter 3:15)."

6

The Interpreter's House

Before the journey gets harder, Christian is taken to the Interpreter's House — a place where the Holy Spirit teaches through object lessons. He sees a fire that keeps burning despite water being poured on it (because oil is being poured from behind). He sees a man in an iron cage of despair. He sees the difference between passion and patience. This is discipleship — being taught to see with spiritual eyes before you're tested.
John 16:13"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth."
1 Corinthians 2:14"The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him."
🙏 Pray

"Holy Spirit, be my Interpreter. I confess I've relied on human logic more than Your revelation. Open my eyes to see what I've been blind to. Teach me before the test comes (John 16:13)."

🪞 Reflect

"Are you being taught by the Spirit — or just consuming content? When was the last time God showed you something you couldn't have figured out on your own? What 'object lesson' has He been trying to show you?"

⚡ Act

"Spend 20 minutes in a passage this week asking only one question: 'What are You showing me, Holy Spirit?' Don't look for information — look for revelation (Ephesians 1:17-18)."

7

The Cross — The Burden Falls

This is the turning point of the entire journey. Christian comes to a hill, and at the top is a Cross. The moment he reaches it, the burden on his back — the one he's carried since the City of Destruction — falls off, rolls down the hill, and disappears into an open tomb. Gone. Forever. Three Shining Ones appear: one declares his sins forgiven, another clothes him in new garments, and the third gives him a sealed scroll — his assurance of salvation. This is the gospel.
Galatians 2:20"I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me."
Isaiah 53:5"He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."
2 Corinthians 5:17"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
🙏 Pray

"Jesus, I bring the burden I'm still carrying — the guilt, the shame, the sin I keep picking back up. I lay it at Your Cross right now. I receive Your forgiveness. I will not pick it up again."

🪞 Reflect

"Have you truly let the burden fall? Or have you picked it back up? What sin, guilt, or shame do you keep carrying that Jesus already paid for? Why won't you let it go?"

⚡ Act

"Write down the burden you keep carrying. Then physically crumple the paper and throw it away as you pray. This is an act of faith: 'It is finished' (John 19:30). Walk away from it."

"He hath given me rest by His sorrow, and life by His death."
— Christian, at the Cross
8

Hill Difficulty

After the Cross, the road doesn't get easier — it gets steeper. Christian faces Hill Difficulty. Two men, Formalist and Hypocrisy, take shortcuts around the hill and are destroyed. Christian climbs straight up. Halfway up, he falls asleep and drops his scroll. He has to go back and retrieve it, losing precious time. Shortcuts kill. Complacency costs. The way up is always through.
James 1:2-4"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness."
Hebrews 12:11"For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess I've looked for shortcuts. I've wanted the easy road. I renounce the lie that says growth should be comfortable. Give me the strength to climb — and the discipline not to fall asleep."

🪞 Reflect

"What 'Hill Difficulty' are you climbing right now? Are you taking shortcuts or going straight up? Have you fallen asleep and lost your scroll — your spiritual passion, your first love?"

⚡ Act

"Identify the hard obedience you've been avoiding — the conversation, the commitment, the discipline. Do it this week. Climb the hill. No shortcuts (Hebrews 12:11)."

9

The Lions

As Christian approaches Palace Beautiful, two roaring lions block the path. They look terrifying, but the Watchman reveals the truth: the lions are chained. They can roar, but they can't reach the path. As long as you stay in the middle, they can't touch you. This is fear exposed. The enemy uses fear as a roadblock — but it's an illusion. The lions are chained. The roar is real. The danger is not.
2 Timothy 1:7"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."
1 Peter 5:8"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess I've been stopped by chained lions — fears that have no power over me. I renounce the spirit of fear. I declare that You have given me power, love, and a sound mind."

🪞 Reflect

"What 'lions' are you facing right now? Can you see the chains — or are you only focused on the teeth? What fear is stopping you from walking forward on the path God has called you to?"

⚡ Act

"Walk toward the thing you've been afraid of this week. Name the fear. Then speak 2 Timothy 1:7 over it out loud. Stay on the path. The lions are chained."

"Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life."
— Revelation 2:10
10

Palace Beautiful

After passing the lions, Christian is welcomed into Palace Beautiful — a place of rest, fellowship, teaching, and preparation. He's fed at the Lord's table, shown the records of the saints who came before him, and given a room called Peace. Palace Beautiful is the local church at its best: a place where pilgrims are restored, equipped, and encouraged before the next battle.
Hebrews 10:24-25"Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together."
Psalm 133:1"Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!"
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess I've tried to walk this road alone. I renounce the lie that says I don't need community. Plant me in a Palace Beautiful — and make me a blessing to those who are there."

🪞 Reflect

"Do you have a Palace Beautiful — a community that genuinely feeds, teaches, and equips you? Or are you a lone ranger? What would change if you committed fully to a body of believers?"

⚡ Act

"Commit to one act of genuine fellowship this week — not surface-level coffee, but a conversation that goes deep. Break isolation. 'Two are better than one' (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)."

11

Arming for Battle

Before Christian leaves Palace Beautiful, he's given armor — the full armor of God. Helmet, breastplate, shield, sword, and shoes. But there's no armor for the back. The message is clear: you're meant to face the enemy, not run from him. This isn't optional equipment. This is survival gear. Every piece matters, and every piece left off creates a vulnerability.
Ephesians 6:11-13"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood."
Romans 13:12"Let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess I've gone into battle unarmed — relying on my own strength instead of Your armor. I put on the full armor today. Helmet, breastplate, shield, sword, shoes. I will not go naked into the fight."

🪞 Reflect

"Which piece of armor are you missing right now? Belt of truth? Breastplate of righteousness? Shield of faith? Sword of the Spirit? Where is the enemy consistently hitting you — that's the missing piece."

⚡ Act

"Read Ephesians 6:10-18 and physically pray through each piece every morning this week. Speak it out loud. Dress for war before the day starts."

12

Apollyon

In the Valley of Humiliation, Christian meets Apollyon — a terrifying creature covered in scales like a fish, wings like a dragon, feet like a bear, and a mouth like a lion. Apollyon claims ownership over Christian and demands he return to his old kingdom. The battle is fierce. Christian is wounded. His sword is knocked from his hand. But at the moment of defeat, he grabs the Sword of the Spirit and drives it into the beast. Apollyon flees. The fight wasn't pretty — but the victory was decisive.
James 4:7"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Revelation 12:11"They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony."
1 John 4:4"He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I renounce every claim the enemy makes over my life. I am not his. I was bought with blood. I resist him in the name of Jesus and I will not go back to the old kingdom (Revelation 12:11)."

🪞 Reflect

"Where is the enemy accusing you right now? What old identity is he dragging you back to? Where has pride made you vulnerable to Apollyon's attacks? Name the battle you're currently in."

⚡ Act

"Memorize one verse that declares your identity in Christ. When the enemy accuses, speak it out loud. Write it on a card and carry it this week. The Sword is how you win."

13

Valley of the Shadow of Death

If Apollyon was a face-to-face fight, the Valley of the Shadow is a walk through total darkness — alone. The path is narrow with a ditch on one side and a quagmire on the other. Demons whisper blasphemies. Flames erupt from the ground. Christian can't see a step ahead. He nearly falls in. But in the darkest moment, he hears a voice ahead praying Psalm 23 — another pilgrim walking through the same valley. He's not alone. And morning comes.
Psalm 23:4"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
Isaiah 50:10"Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I'm in the valley. I can't see the path. I can barely hear Your voice. But I will fear no evil because You are with me. Walk with me through this darkness. Don't let me fall."

🪞 Reflect

"Are you in a valley season right now — depression, grief, spiritual darkness? Have you been trying to see the whole path instead of trusting one step at a time? What voices are whispering in the dark?"

⚡ Act

"If you're in a valley, tell someone. Today. Don't walk through it alone. And if you're NOT in a valley, call someone who might be — be the voice that prays Psalm 23 ahead of them."

14

Faithful Joins the Journey

Coming out of the valley, Christian meets Faithful — a fellow pilgrim from the City of Destruction who took a different route. They walk together, share stories, and strengthen each other. Faithful has his own scars: he was tempted by Wanton (lust), attacked by Adam the First (the old nature), and beaten by Moses (the law's condemnation). But he survived. Now they walk side by side. The journey was never meant to be solo.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10"Two are better than one... For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up."
Proverbs 27:17"Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess I've been walking alone. I renounce the pride that says I don't need a Faithful. Send me a brother — and make me a brother to someone else."

🪞 Reflect

"Who is your Faithful — the person who knows the real you, who has walked through fire, and who will tell you the truth even when it hurts? If you don't have one, why not?"

⚡ Act

"Reach out to one brother this week. Not small talk — real talk. Be honest about where you are. 'Iron sharpens iron' only happens face to face (Proverbs 27:17)."

15

Vanity Fair

Christian and Faithful enter Vanity Fair — a permanent market set up by Beelzebub where everything the world sells is on display: houses, lands, honors, promotions, pleasures, bodies, souls, silver, gold, pearls, and precious stones. It's been running for thousands of years and every pilgrim must pass through it. The moment they refuse to buy, the crowd turns hostile. In Vanity Fair, the greatest sin isn't indulgence — it's indifference to the merchandise.
1 John 2:15-17"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him."
Romans 12:2"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind."
James 4:4"Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?"
🙏 Pray

"Father, I confess I've been shopping in Vanity Fair. I've bought the world's success, the world's comfort, and the world's approval. I renounce the lie that these things satisfy. Only You do."

🪞 Reflect

"What is Vanity Fair selling you right now — status, comfort, approval, pleasure? Where have you been browsing instead of walking? What would it cost you to refuse the merchandise?"

⚡ Act

"Fast from one worldly distraction this week — social media, streaming, excessive news. Replace it with prayer and the Word. See what God says when the noise stops (Colossians 3:2)."

16

Faithful's Martyrdom

The crowd at Vanity Fair turns on Christian and Faithful. They're arrested, mocked, beaten, and put on trial. Faithful is convicted by a jury of liars — including Mr. No-good, Mr. Malice, and Mr. Cruelty. He is burned alive. But Bunyan writes that a chariot of fire carries Faithful straight to the Celestial City. The world calls it defeat. Heaven calls it a coronation. Faithfulness doesn't always lead to deliverance — sometimes it leads to glory.
Revelation 2:10"Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life."
2 Timothy 4:7-8"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess I've measured faithfulness by results instead of obedience. I renounce the lie that faithfulness always leads to earthly reward. Give me the courage to be faithful even unto death."

🪞 Reflect

"Where has your faithfulness cost you? Are you willing to lose your reputation, your career, or your comfort for the name of Jesus? Do you trust that God sees what the world despises?"

⚡ Act

"Read Hebrews 11:35-40 — the 'hall of faith' who were tortured, stoned, sawn in two. Then do the faithful thing you've been avoiding this week. Obedience before outcome."

17

Hopeful Joins Christian

After Faithful's death, a new companion joins Christian — Hopeful. He was converted in Vanity Fair by watching how Christian and Faithful lived and died. This is the ripple effect: your faithfulness doesn't just save you — it ignites others. Hopeful didn't come to faith through a sermon alone. He came through witnessing a life lived and given for Christ. Your testimony is someone else's invitation.
2 Timothy 2:2"What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also."
John 12:24"Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I want my life to produce Hopefuls — people who come to faith because they watched me walk through fire without letting go of You. Use my suffering, not just my success."

🪞 Reflect

"Who is watching your life? Is someone younger in faith looking at how you handle trials? What are they learning? Would watching your life make them want to follow Jesus — or run from Him?"

⚡ Act

"Identify one person you can disciple or mentor — someone who's watching. Reach out this week. Invest what was invested in you (1 Corinthians 4:15-16)."

"I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
— Philippians 3:14
18

Mr. By-Ends

Christian and Hopeful meet Mr. By-Ends — a man from the town of Fair-speech who only follows religion when it's profitable, comfortable, and socially advantageous. He says: "I prefer religion when she walks in her silver slippers." He won't follow God when it costs anything. He won't carry a cross if it ruins his clothes. By-Ends represents the comfortable, convenient Christianity that millions practice: a faith that serves self instead of the King.
1 Timothy 6:5-6"...people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. But godliness with contentment is great gain."
Luke 14:27"Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess there's a By-Ends in me — a part that only wants You when it's comfortable. I renounce the lie that faith should be easy. Burn out every trace of fair-weather Christianity."

🪞 Reflect

"Is your faith convenient or costly? Would you follow Jesus if He never blessed you materially? Would you worship Him in poverty, sickness, and rejection — or only in silver slippers?"

⚡ Act

"Step into the costly part of obedience this week. Give when it hurts. Serve when it's inconvenient. Choose faithfulness over comfort. That's how you kill By-Ends (Luke 14:33)."

19

Demas' Silver Mine

Along the road, Demas calls out from a hillside: "Come see! There's a silver mine here!" He promises wealth. All they have to do is step off the path. Christian refuses. Hopeful nearly turns aside. Demas is the voice of financial temptation — not dramatic sin, but the quiet lure of "just a little more." In the Bible, Demas was Paul's companion who "loved this present world" and deserted him (2 Timothy 4:10). The love of money doesn't feel like sin — it feels like wisdom.
1 Timothy 6:10"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith."
Matthew 6:24"No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and money."
🙏 Pray

"Father, I confess that money has more power over my decisions than I want to admit. I renounce the lie that financial security is the same as spiritual security. You are my provider, not my portfolio."

🪞 Reflect

"Where is 'Demas' calling you off the path? What financial temptation makes you drift? Would you take a job, a client, or an opportunity that would make you richer but spiritually poorer?"

⚡ Act

"Give something away this week — generously, sacrificially, in a way that actually costs you something. Break greed's power with radical generosity (Matthew 6:21)."

20

Doubting Castle & Giant Despair

Christian and Hopeful leave the path to rest in a meadow — and Giant Despair captures them. He locks them in Doubting Castle and beats them daily. The giant's wife, Diffidence, whispers that they should kill themselves. They nearly give up. This is what happens when you step off the path — even slightly. Despair has a castle, and it has a dungeon. The worst part? The door was never actually locked. They had the key the whole time.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9"We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed."
Psalm 42:5"Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess I have been in Doubting Castle — beaten by despair, listening to lies about ending it all. I renounce the lie that there is no way out. You are my hope and my deliverer."

🪞 Reflect

"What compromise led you into Doubting Castle? Is Giant Despair telling you there's no way back? What lie are you believing about your future, your worth, or your relationship with God?"

⚡ Act

"Name the lie despair has told you. Write the truth beside it using Scripture. Speak it out loud every morning until the giant falls. The key is in your pocket (John 8:32)."

21

The Key Called Promise

In the darkest moment of Doubting Castle, Christian remembers: "What a fool I am! I have a key in my bosom called Promise that will open any lock in Doubting Castle!" He pulls it out, and every door swings open. They walk out free. The promises of God are not decorative — they are operational. They unlock the chains of despair, fear, and hopelessness. But they only work when you remember them and use them.
2 Peter 1:4"He has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature."
Romans 4:20-21"No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess I've been sitting in a dungeon with the key in my pocket. I've forgotten Your promises. I pick up the Key of Promise now and I walk out of this prison in Jesus' name."

🪞 Reflect

"What promise of God have you forgotten? What prison are you sitting in that's already unlocked? Write down three promises of God that apply to your current situation."

⚡ Act

"Write three promises of God on index cards. Put them where you'll see them daily — bathroom mirror, car dashboard, phone wallpaper. Memorize one this week. Use the key."

22

The Delectable Mountains

After escaping Doubting Castle, Christian and Hopeful reach the Delectable Mountains — Immanuel's Land. The Shepherds show them four things: a warning view of the way to hell, a telescope to glimpse the Celestial City, and graves of those who fell. This is a mountaintop moment — a spiritual high after a season of despair. But Bunyan places it carefully: the view of glory comes after the dungeon of doubt. You don't get the mountain without the valley.
Hebrews 12:22"You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem."
Habakkuk 2:1-3"I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, give me a mountaintop moment. Let me see the Celestial City from here — even if only a glimpse. Restore my vision of where this journey ends. Remind me what I'm running toward."

🪞 Reflect

"When was the last time you had a 'mountain view' — a moment of clarity about eternal things? What brought you there? How do you get back when the valley comes again?"

⚡ Act

"Schedule a spiritual retreat this month — even a half-day of prayer and solitude. Get to the mountain. Let the Shepherds show you what's ahead (Habakkuk 2:1-3)."

23

The Flatterer

A man in a white robe approaches and offers to guide them. He seems holy. He sounds right. But he leads them into a net — they're trapped. A Shining One appears, frees them, and whips them for not checking the map. The Flatterer is false teaching wrapped in religious language. He doesn't look like the enemy. He looks like a pastor, a teacher, a spiritual guide. But he leads you off the path with a smile.
Proverbs 29:5"A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet."
2 Corinthians 11:14"Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, give me discernment to see the Flatterer — the false teacher who looks holy but leads me into a net. I will test every spirit by Your Word, not by how good it makes me feel (1 John 4:1)."

🪞 Reflect

"Who or what has been flattering you? A teaching that feels good but doesn't match Scripture? A voice that tells you what you want to hear instead of what you need to hear?"

⚡ Act

"Test one teaching you've been following against Scripture this week. Open the map. If it doesn't hold up, reject it — no matter how good it felt (Acts 17:11)."

24

The Atheist

Near the end of the journey, Christian and Hopeful meet a man laughing at them — the Atheist. He tells them the Celestial City doesn't exist. He's been looking for 20 years and never found it. His weapon isn't arguments — it's cynicism. He makes the whole journey seem foolish. The Atheist is the most dangerous near the finish line. He appears when you're tired, and his mockery hits harder than Apollyon's sword because it appeals to exhaustion.
Hebrews 11:1"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
2 Peter 3:3-4"Scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, 'Where is the promise of his coming?'"
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I reject the spirit of cynicism. I refuse to let a scoffer steal my finish line. The Celestial City is real, and I am going to make it. Strengthen my faith when the mockers come."

🪞 Reflect

"Has someone's cynicism shaken your faith? Have you been tempted to quit near the finish line? When doubt creeps in, do you run to Scripture or to YouTube?"

⚡ Act

"Write down five specific times God has proven faithful in your life. When the Atheist speaks, read your own testimony. Your history with God is your defense (Psalm 77:11-12)."

25

The Enchanted Ground

The Enchanted Ground is a place of supernatural drowsiness. The air itself makes you sleepy. If you fall asleep here, you never wake up. It's not a battlefield — it's a bedroom. The temptation isn't sin, it's spiritual apathy. Comfort. Complacency. Netflix. Routine. The Enchanted Ground is the most dangerous place for mature Christians: you've survived Apollyon, Vanity Fair, and Doubting Castle, but now you're just... tired. And tired people fall asleep.
Romans 13:11"Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed."
1 Thessalonians 5:6"So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, wake me up! I confess I've been sleepwalking through my faith — going through motions without fire. I renounce the spirit of slumber. Set me on fire again."

🪞 Reflect

"Are you on the Enchanted Ground right now? Has your prayer life gone quiet? Your Bible gathering dust? Are you surviving on spiritual autopilot? When was the last time you were genuinely hungry for God?"

⚡ Act

"Set an alarm — literally — for 5am three days this week. Get up and pray before the world wakes up. Break the sleep. Refuse to sleepwalk to the finish line (Mark 14:38)."

26

Beulah Land

After the Enchanted Ground, the pilgrims enter Beulah Land — a place of supernatural beauty, rest, and nearness to God. The air is sweet. Flowers bloom year-round. The sun never sets. The Celestial City is visible from here. Beulah means "married" — this is where the believer experiences intimate union with Christ. It's not heaven yet, but it's close enough to see the gates. Some believers taste Beulah in worship, in prayer, or in those rare moments when eternity breaks through.
Isaiah 62:4"You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married."
Psalm 16:11"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, bring me to Beulah. I want to know the sweetness of Your presence — not just Your power or Your provision, but You. Let me taste eternity today."

🪞 Reflect

"Have you experienced Beulah Land — supernatural peace and nearness to God that nothing on earth can explain? What brought you there? How do you stay?"

⚡ Act

"Spend 15 minutes in complete silence before God today. No requests. No music. No agenda. Just presence. Let the sweetness of Beulah settle in (Psalm 46:10)."

27

The River of Death

The final obstacle before the Celestial City is the River — there is no bridge. Every pilgrim must cross it. Christian begins to sink. He panics. His sins come rushing back. The water rises to his mouth. But Hopeful holds him up and speaks truth: "I feel the bottom, and it is good!" The depth of the river depends on the pilgrim's faith. For some, it's ankle-deep. For Christian, it almost swallows him. But he makes it. He always makes it — because the One on the other shore is calling him home.
1 Corinthians 15:55-57"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Psalm 23:4"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I confess my fear of the river. But You conquered the grave. Death has no sting for those who are Yours. When my time comes, hold me up. I will cross over to You."

🪞 Reflect

"Are you afraid of the river? Of death? Of the unknown? What would it look like to face your final crossing with Jesus on the other shore calling your name?"

⚡ Act

"Live this week as if the river is near. What would you do differently? Who would you call? What would you say? Do those things now — don't wait for the river (James 4:14)."

28

The Celestial City

Christian and Hopeful emerge from the river and are met by angels with trumpets. They're escorted up the hill to the Celestial City. The gates open. They see streets of gold, hear heavenly music, and are clothed in garments that shine like the sun. Bells ring. A voice says: "Enter into the joy of your Lord." Every battle, every wound, every tear — it was all worth it. The journey is over. The pilgrim is home.
Revelation 21:4"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore."
2 Timothy 4:8"There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, let the Celestial City be real to me — not just theology, but a living hope. I fix my eyes on the finished line. Every trial is temporary. Your city is forever."

🪞 Reflect

"Does the Celestial City feel real to you? Does it drive your daily decisions? Or have you been building your life as if this world is all there is?"

⚡ Act

"Make one decision this week with eternity in mind — not earthly ROI, not comfort, not convenience: eternity. 'Set your minds on things that are above' (Colossians 3:1-2)."

29

Ignorance — The Warning

Bunyan ends with a gut-punch. Ignorance — a man who took shortcuts, climbed the fence instead of entering through the gate, and never carried a burden because he never admitted he had one — arrives at the Celestial City gates. He has no scroll. The King orders him bound and carried through a door in the side of the hill — the door to hell. Even from the gates of heaven. Bunyan writes: "Then I saw that there was a way to hell, even from the gates of heaven." This is the most terrifying line in the book.
Matthew 7:21-23"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord'... And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you.'"
Proverbs 14:12"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, search my heart. Is my faith real — or am I Ignorance? Am I trusting the blood of Jesus or my own goodness? Test me, know me, and lead me in the everlasting way (Psalm 139:23-24)."

🪞 Reflect

"Is your faith real or performative? Did you enter through the Gate or climb the fence? Are you trusting Christ — or your own résumé? Could you be Ignorance and not know it?"

⚡ Act

"Open your scroll — your assurance of salvation. Can you point to a specific moment you surrendered everything to Christ? If not, do it now. Today. Don't arrive at the gates without it."

The Call to Every Pilgrim

The journey is mapped. The dangers are marked. The Cross stands at the center. The Celestial City shines at the end. Now it's your turn. Where are you on the map? Are you still in the City of Destruction? Stuck in the Slough? Sleeping on Hill Difficulty? Trapped in Doubting Castle? Standing at Vanity Fair? The journey doesn't end when you close this study guide. It ends when you hear the King say: "Enter into the joy of your Lord."
Philippians 3:13-14"Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
Hebrews 12:1-2"Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith."
🙏 Pray

"Lord, I am a pilgrim. I am not home yet. Keep me on the path. Give me eyes to see the City, ears to hear Your voice, and legs to keep walking — even when the road is hard."

🪞 Reflect

"Where are you on the journey right now? Name the location. What's your next step? Who is walking with you — and who have you left behind?"

⚡ Act

"Share this study with one other pilgrim. Walk together. Run the race together. 'Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus' (Hebrews 12:1-2)."

⚔️ Pilgrim's Commitment

I commit to walk the narrow path — through valleys and over mountains, past every temptation and through every trial — with my eyes fixed on the Celestial City and my hand in the hand of my King. I will not take shortcuts. I will not sleep on the Enchanted Ground. I will carry the Key of Promise. I will finish the race.
